The fountain in Hindeloopen was designed by artist Shen Yuan, who delved into the city’s history and discovered a myth related to the city’s coat of arms. The coat of arms features a tree, a deer, and a hind. Legend has it that the tree is a tree of life. Its roots are in the underworld, and its branches reach to the heavens, symbolizing vitality and wisdom. The tree and two antlers are depicted in the fountain.
