By boat to Harlingen
From Leeuwarden, it’s about 24 kilometers to sail to Harlingen. Just outside Leeuwarden, on the Van Harinxma Canal, you come to a fork. If you turn to port (left), you sail towards Lemmer; if you continue straight, you end up in Harlingen. You’ll pass through Rintsumazijl, Deinum, and Dronryp before reaching Franeker. Tip: moor in Franeker and explore the beautiful city center on foot. From Franeker, it’s another 6 kilometers to Harlingen. Along this route, you pass through the Frisiabrêge, the bridge near Kiesterzijl, and the Koningsbrug.
Harbors in Harlingen
In Harlingen, there are several transient harbors where you can dock your motorboat. You can dock at the Zuidoostersingel (Southeast Canal) and the Noordoostersingel (Northeast Canal), and there are also several marinas in Harlingen. These locations are situated in the historical center of Harlingen. Everywhere, you’ll find water and electricity hookups, as well as sanitary facilities.
Sights in Harlingen
After finding a nice spot for your boat, it’s time to explore the cozy city of Harlingen. Harlingen is perfect for exploring on foot. In the center, you’ll find beautiful canal houses, warehouses, and charming parks. Throughout the city, you’ll see splendid old buildings with lots of character. If you look closely, you’ll notice painted wall advertisements on various facades. Around 1900, shopkeepers started using this method to advertise their goods. In total, 21 paintings have been restored. Can you spot them all?
Harlingen has a rich maritime history, and the Hannemahuis museum is full of interesting information about all the sea heroes Harlingen has known. Get to know Harlingen and dive into the city’s culture and history. Harlingen is also home to one of the last true tile factories. The paintings on the tiles perfectly match the image of Harlingen: sailing ships, fish, and fishermen. Looking for an original souvenir? A bit further out, just outside the center, is Harlingen’s seaport, located on the Wadden Sea. From here, boats depart for Vlieland and Terschelling. You’ll also find Harlingerstrand here, where you can enjoy the sun and sand in summer. Stay until dusk, as this is the perfect spot to witness the most beautiful sunset.

After strolling through the city, if you’re feeling hungry, there are plenty of delicious dining options in Harlingen. For example, you can enjoy a meal at Café Nooitgedagt, located in one of the oldest warehouses in Harlingen. The building is still in its original state, offering a cozy and homely atmosphere with the best coffees and cakes.
