Are you looking for a sailing route through Friesland? With the Nature and City route, you will sail through Friesland and Groningen. You will visit Dokkum and Leeuwarden and the fishing village of Zoutkamp. And sail through National Park de Alde Feanen and National Park Lauwersmeer. Which of our classic boats will you take on this adventure?
Day 1 – Dokkum – 12km – 2.5 hours
This route starts just like all other routes from Marina Lunegat. From there, you will go via the Dokkumer Diep and the lock towards Dokkum. Dokkum is the first 11 Cities city you will encounter. You can moor here along the ramparts or right in the center. From there, you can take a walk around the city and over the ramparts.
Nice restaurants in Dokkum are:
- Hotel Café Restaurant de Posthoorn
- Pizzeria d’Angelo
- De Waegh
Which boat will you choose to go on an adventure?
Day 2 – Alde Feanen – 17km – 2 hours
From Leeuwarden, you will sail via the Van Harinxmakanaal towards the village of Warten, where you will cross the Prinses Magrietkanaal. *Note! Large ships also sail here, and they always have the right of way.* You will now enter National Park de Alde Feanen where there are many nice Marrekrite docks.
Day 3 – Lauwersmeer – 35km – 4 hours
From the Alde Feanen, you will sail to the Prinses Margrietkanaal. You will follow the canal to Burgumer Mar. Here you will turn left onto the Kuikhornstervaart. This waterway eventually leads to the lock in Dokkumer Nieuwe Zijlen. You can spend the night along the way, at the home port, or on the Lauwersmeer.
Day 4 – Lauwersmeer – 15km – 2 hours
On day five, you can explore the Lauwersmeer, sail to Zoutkamp or Lauwersoog, or have lunch on one of the uninhabited islands.
Tips for this sailing route through Friesland
Bring some extra small change for bridges, water, and showers. Usually, you need to drop 50 cents in the machines.
In most marinas, there are toilets and showers. If you want to use these, we recommend mooring in a marina at night.
In this route, we have not taken into account the mooring fees in the harbors.
