Bolsward is the sixth city on the Eleven Cities route. Situated amidst the meadows, you’ll find this beautiful Hanseatic city. Bolsward was built on three mounds. Although these mounds are no longer visible today, their historical significance remains evident in the city’s heritage. Bolsward boasts stunning architecture and rich cultural heritage. The city is centered around the old inner harbor and, of course, easily accessible by boat!
Marinas in Bolsward
There are several places in Bolsward where you can moor your boat. One of the most popular spots is the transient harbor of Bolsward, located in the heart of the city. Here, you’ll find mooring spots near the Gijsbert Japicx Bridge on the northwest side of the center, and also at Kruiswater on the south side of Bolsward. Facilities such as toilets, showers, and water are available. The mooring fee is around €1.50 per meter per night, plus tourist tax.
A City Walk through Bolsward
Once you’ve docked, exploring the city on foot is easy. Take a stroll along the canals and through the parks. Don’t miss the Martinikerk, one of Bolsward’s most significant historical landmarks. This beautiful church is built in the Gothic style and is well-preserved. For a different kind of church experience, visit the Broerekerk. Originally a monastery church, it suffered a fire in 1980 but has been revitalized with a glass roof that brings the sky closer than ever before. We highly recommend a visit.
Also, the Bolsward town hall is a must-see. This grand building in the center of Bolsward was designed by Jacob Gysbert, the father of Gysbert Japicx, and is adorned with intricate details. Additionally, Bolsward boasts a unique fountain shaped like a bat, adding to its charm.
