Are you looking for a boating route through Friesland? With the Nature and City route, you’ll sail through Friesland and Groningen. You’ll visit Dokkum and Leeuwarden, and the fishing village of Zoutkamp. You’ll also sail through the Alde Feanen National Park and Lauwersmeer National Park. Which of our classic boats will you take on this adventure?
Day 1 – Dokkum – 12km – 2.5 hours
This route starts like all other routes from Jachthaven Lunegat. From there, you’ll go via the Dokkumer Diep and the lock towards Dokkum. Dokkum is the first of the 11 cities you will encounter. You can moor along the ramparts or in the center of town. From there, you can take a stroll around the city and along the ramparts.

Day 2 – Alde Feanen – 17km – 2 hours
From Leeuwarden, you sail via the Van Harinxma Canal towards the village of Warten, where you cross the Princess Margriet Canal. *Please note! Large ships also navigate here and always have right of way.* You now enter the Alde Feanen National Park, where there are many delightful Marrekrite mooring spots.
Day 3 – Lauwersmeer – 35km – 4 hours
From Alde Feanen, you sail towards the Princess Margriet Canal. Follow the canal until you reach Burgumer Mar. Here, you turn left onto the Kuikhornstervaart. This waterway eventually leads to the lock at Dokkumer Nieuwe Zijlen. You can overnight along the way, at the home port, or on the Lauwersmeer.
Dag 4 – Lauwersmeer – 15km – 2 hours
On day four, you can explore the Lauwersmeer, sail to Zoutkamp or Lauwersoog, or have lunch on one of the uninhabited islands.
Tips for this boating route through Friesland:
Bring some extra small change for bridges, water, and showers. Usually, you need to insert 50 cent coins into the machines.
Most marinas have toilets and showers. If you plan to use them, we recommend staying overnight in a marina.
