By boat to Bolsward, the Eleven Cities heart of Friesland

Bolsward is the sixth city on the Eleven Cities route. Nestled in the meadows, you will find this beautiful Hanseatic city. Bolsward was built on three terps. The three terps are no longer visible, but they can still be traced in the city’s history. In Bolsward, you will find stunning architecture and rich cultural heritage. The city is located around the old inner harbor. And of course, it’s easy to visit by boat!

There are several places in Bolsward where you can dock. One of the most popular spots is the visitor harbor of Bolsward, located in the heart of the city. Here, there are several places where you can moor your boat. You can dock at the Gijsbert Japicxbrug, on the northwest side of the center. Also, at the Kruiswater on the south side of Bolsward. You will find facilities such as a toilet, shower, and water. The mooring fee is around €1.50 per meter per night. Additionally, a tourist tax is applied.

A city walk through Bolsward

Once you have docked, you can easily explore the city on foot. Take a walk along the canals and parks. Also, visit the Martinikerk. This is one of the most important historical landmarks of Bolsward. This beautiful church is built in the Gothic style and is still in good condition. Want to see a completely different type of church? Then visit the Boerekerk. This church was built as a monastery church but partially burned down in 1980. Now it has been revitalized, and the glass roof brings the sky closer than ever. We definitely think this is worth a visit.

The town hall of Bolsward is also unmissable. This large building stands in the center of Bolsward and was designed by Jacob Gysbert, the father of Gysbert Japicx. It is richly decorated with beautiful details. Additionally, you will find a unique fountain in Bolsward, shaped like a bat.

If you visit Bolsward in the last weekend of June, you can join the festivities during Heamiel. An annual festive weekend with fun activities and beautiful parades.
