The harbor of Hindeloopen

Before you can explore Hindeloopen, you need to find a mooring for the boat. This can be done at the Hindeloopen marina. This harbor is located on the IJsselmeer and at the edge of the town. In this harbor, each mooring has access to an electricity and drinking water connection. The use of these is included in the harbor fees. From the harbor, you can easily walk into the town.

What to do in Hindeloopen

Hindeloopen is a picturesque town on the IJsselmeer and is known for its historical painting and traditional costumes. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Hindeloopen was a center of international shipping trade. This is still visible in the colorful art, traditional costumes, and also the language, Hindeloops, which is a combination of West Frisian, English, Danish, and Norwegian. The old core of Hindeloopen has small streets, canals, and wooden bridges that are super fun to walk or cycle through.

Hindeloopen has a rich maritime history, with historical captain’s houses, a wooden lock keeper’s house, and the “lie bench,” where sailors and helmsmen shared their tall tales from their journeys.

The Hindeloopen Museum

In the town, you will find Museum Hindeloopen, which tells the history of the town from its origins in the 13th century to its prosperity during the Golden Age. Here, you can learn about the traditional costumes, customs, and the traditional hand-painted Hindeloopen furniture.

Beach of Hindeloopen

The IJsselmeer is a very popular spot for water sports enthusiasts. Along the dike at Hindeloopen, you will find a small beach, which is the kitesurfing spot on the IJsselmeer. With the wind shifting from north to west and south, you can kite here quite well. The water is shallow but can be very choppy, which can make it more challenging for beginners.

Camping Hindeloopen

From the Camping in Hindeloopen, you can go to the (kite)surf school of Holger Hartmann. On this website, you will find more information about taking (kite)surf lessons.

At restaurant de 3 Harinkjes, Restaurant Sudersee, and Cafe Restaurant de Hinde, Dutch dishes are on the menu. Additionally, you will find an Argentine and Mexican restaurant, a pizzeria, and a pancake restaurant.

Fountain Hindeloopen

Like the other Eleven Cities, Hindeloopen also has a fountain. The fountain in Hindeloopen was designed by artist Shen Yuan, who delved into the history of the town and found a myth surrounding the city coat of arms. The coat of arms features a tree, a deer, and a hind. The story goes that the tree is a tree of life. The roots of this tree are in the underworld, and the branches point to the sky, representing life force and wisdom. The tree and two antlers are reflected in the fountain.
