By boat to the smallest Eleven Cities town Sloten

From the Slotermeer, you sail through the Slotergat to Sloten, the smallest town in Friesland. The town still has a medieval character with its streets and alleys, water gates, and of course, the fortification wall. Renting a boat and sailing to Sloten, we think it’s a great idea!

Sloten the Sipelstêd

The city’s rampart is remarkable and has been completely preserved to this day. This ensures that the original contours of the town are still visible. Anyone viewing the town from above will recognize the shape of an onion. Sloten is therefore also called sipelstêd, which is Frisian for onion town. Designer and renowned fortress builder Menno van Coehoorn created the design of the fortified town and later also built it. Besides Sloten, Coehoorn also contributed to Zwolle, Nijmegen, Grave, Breda, and Bergen op Zoom.

What is there to do in Sloten?

Do you want to delve into the interesting history of Sloten? Then visit the Museum Sloten, which is also known as Museum Stêdhus Sleat. Here you will learn more about Sloten’s role in the Eighty Years’ War and find a unique collection of magic lanterns.

City walk

In Sloten, you can take a city walk of 1.7 kilometers. With this walk, you will discover why Sloten is the ideal fortified town. You can find the city walk for three euros at the VVV locations.

Slotermeer

The Slotermeer is a lake in the southwest of Friesland. The lake borders Sloten, Balk, and Woudsend. The Eleven Cities Tour crosses the Slotermeer no less than twice.

Marinas in Sloten

Marina de Lemsterpoort is the marina of Sloten. The marina is just a few minutes’ walk from the center. The harbor has about 50 berths for visitors during the high season.

Upon arrival at the harbor, the boat may be docked at the registration dock, which is located next to the harbor office. The harbor master will assign you a berth, after which you may place the boat in the harbor. In 2022, the harbor had a rate of €10.50 for boats between 9 and 10 meters, with an additional €0.50 per kWh for electricity and a tourist tax of €1.20 per person.
